Washed Out: Life of Leisure EP

March 4, 2010

What the brilliant minds  at pitchfork had to say about Washed Out’s Life Of Leisure EP:
(Rated 8.0) “Washed Out, the solo project of Georgia (via South Carolina) multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene, fits in almost too well with the balmy lo-fi synth atmospherics of peers like Neon Indian, Toro Y Moi, Small Black, the higher-fi jj, or the darker, heavier SALEM, as well as the more guitar-based Real Estate, Best Coast, and Pearl Harbour.”
Washed Out’s MySpace page now lists “no-fi” as its genre.

My take:  Washed Out’s sonics do sound most like Neon Indian, but structurally its closer to Panda Bear.  Life Of Leisure sounds like an awesome collection of jams rather than songs.  He picks an idea, unfolds it, and elaborates on it.  Once you’ve heard the first few measures, you can expect that it will be there for the rest of the song.  The vocals are always harmonized and  stretched-out over psychedelic 80’s grooves.  The production on this album is spot-on throughout; each song has an amazingly full, dense sound.  This is definitely one of my 2010 favorites.

Catch him live Monday, March 8 @ Mercury Lounge

Standout Track:  “FEEL IT ALL AROUND”
